N2004005_Little Monkey Who Found Mom in Toy Real Inside Luftgekühlt Tokyo: Over 200 Air-Cooled Porsches Transform a Decommissioned Highway For automotive aficionados in Japan, the typical itinerary usually involves immersing themselves in world-class venues like the Tokyo Auto Salon or the Osaka Auto Messe, embarking on pilgrimages to iconic garages, and savoring an excessive quantity of convenience store delicacies. However, this year showcased an exceptionally singular event in the heart of Tokyo, where a breathtaking collection of Porsche vehicles took center stage. For the very first time, Luftgekühlt—the perpetually expanding series dedicated to celebrating all facets of air-cooled Porsche automobiles—has officially arrived in Japan. This pioneering event occupied the now-shuttered KK Line, an elevated expressway segment that once served as a vital artery connecting Tokyo’s Kyobashi and Shimbashi districts. For one day only, this iconic route transformed into a vibrant canvas for the exhibition of German air-cooled Porsche culture, experienced through a distinctly Japanese lens. What once facilitated the daily movement of traffic through the metropolis was repurposed into an extraordinary showcase featuring approximately 220 automobiles, welcoming a staggering 11,600 attendees, and providing a truly unique way to engage with both the history of Tokyo and the legacy of Porsche. As anticipated, Luft Tokyo presented a spectacular spectacle of historically significant Porsche vehicles, ranging from legendary racing machines to highly customized street builds. A particularly striking highlight was the No. 28 Porsche 910, piloted by Tetsu Ikuzawa, which secured an impressive second place overall and claimed the top position in its class at the 1968 Japanese Grand Prix. For enthusiasts of street-focused vehicles, the Auto Garage TBK demo car was undoubtedly the showstopper. It appeared perfectly situated on the KK Line, where it was proudly exhibited rather than engaging in high-speed runs. Arguably the most distinctive feature of the Luft Tokyo initiative was the extension of the event into the evening hours, which fundamentally reshaped the atmosphere of the venue. What commenced as a pristine, gallery-like exhibition gradually transitioned into the quintessential underground, after-dark experience that only Tokyo can deliver. Mark Arcenal, the founder of Illest and Fatlace, attended the event and was profoundly impressed by its execution. “Luft Tokyo was a once-in-a-lifetime experience that I don’t think will ever be duplicated as that area of freeway will turn into retail and a park, I believe,” Arcenal commented. “Glad to experience it and see some of the coolest cars around Tokyo.”
By skillfully merging a location steeped in historical significance with a carefully curated selection of vehicles and an experience that evolved dramatically from daylight to night, Luftgekühlt Tokyo offered a genuinely distinct alternative to Japan’s traditional automotive exhibition calendar. As the Porsches eventually dispersed into the night and the KK Line reverted to its eerily dormant state, participants once again availed themselves of the convenience store offerings, perhaps indulging in a famchiki, or even two. —Photography by Jeremy Anicete Stay Ahead of the Curve.
