Inside Luftgekühlt Tokyo: 200-Plus Air-Cooled Porsches Take Over a Closed Highway
By day, it felt like a car show. By night, Tokyo’s air-cooled Porsche scene came alive.

For Japanese car enthusiasts, a trip to the country typically involves attending auto shows such as the Tokyo Auto Salon or Osaka Auto Messe, visiting renowned garages, and indulging in a substantial amount of konbini (convenience store) food. This year, however, a truly exceptional event took place in the heart of Tokyo, featuring an astonishing collection of Porsches that stole the spotlight.
For the first time in history, Luftgekühlt—the ever-expanding series of events celebrating all things air-cooled Porsche—expanded its reach to Japan. The event transformed the now-decommissioned KK Line, an elevated section of highway that once connected Tokyo’s Kyobashi and Shimbashi districts, into a one-day festival dedicated to German air-cooled Porsche culture, experienced through the unique lens of Japan. What was once a thoroughfare for city traffic was repurposed into a stunning exhibition showcasing around 220 vehicles, attracting 11,600 attendees, and offering an entirely fresh perspective on both Tokyo and the history of Porsche.
As one might anticipate, Luft Tokyo delivered a jaw-dropping display of historic Porsches, ranging from legendary race cars to avant-garde street builds. A significant highlight was the No. 28 Porsche 910, driven by Tetsu Ikuzawa, which achieved second place overall and first in its class at the 1968 Japanese Grand Prix. For those with an appreciation for street-legal cars, the Auto Garage TBK demo car was likely the main attraction. It looked perfectly at home on the KK Line, positioned for display rather than engaging in high-speed maneuvers.
Perhaps the most captivating aspect of the Luft Tokyo event was its extension into the nighttime hours, which completely redefined the atmosphere. The event gradually transitioned from a pristine, almost gallery-like showcase into the kind of underground, after-dark experience that only Tokyo can offer. Mark Arcenal, founder of Illest and Fatlace, was present and expressed his admiration for the event’s outcome. Arcenal commented, “Luft Tokyo was a once-in-a-lifetime experience that I don’t think will ever be duplicated, as that area of freeway will eventually be developed into retail and a park, in my estimation. I’m grateful to have experienced it and witnessed some of the most incredible cars in Tokyo.”
By skillfully blending a historically significant location, a carefully curated selection of automobiles, and an experience that evolved dramatically from day to night, Luftgekühlt Tokyo offered something unique compared to Japan’s traditional automotive showcase calendar. As the Porsches dispersed into the night and the KK Line reverted to its eerily quiet state, participants returned to konbini stores for snacks like famchiki, or perhaps two. —Photography by Jeremy Anicete
