The return of the V-8? A new Mercedes-AMG CLE63 is on the horizon
A new V-8 family developed with the U.S. market at the forefront is making it all possible.

Take heart, enthusiasts: A Mercedes-AMG CLE63 equipped with a powerful new V-8 engine is on its way, and the executives we have spoken with say it is nothing short of phenomenal.
While Mercedes has yet to announce the official release date for the all-new CLE63 coupe and convertible, word on the street is that it is coming, and key executives have already experienced early prototypes. Although we won’t see it this year, according to Adam Chamberlain, CEO of Mercedes-Benz USA, it is going to be an unbelievable vehicle, and he states that it will be well worth the wait.

This is a significant development for Chamberlain and his team, as an estimated 95 percent of all CLE63 sales are projected to be in North America. Therefore, the new CLE63 is being specifically developed as an American-specification model to serve the American market.
As for the V-8 engine, Mercedes-Benz has developed a new family of V-8 powerplants that maintain a high-performance character while significantly reducing emissions to meet stringent future regulatory standards. The new 4.0-liter twin-turbo V-8 featuring a flat-plane crankshaft is already powering the new 2027 S-Class sedan and will also be utilized in the upcoming 2027 Mercedes-Benz GLE580 and GLS580 SUVs, both of which recently made their global premieres. In those vehicles, the engine produces an impressive 530 horsepower and 553 lb-ft of torque. Unsurprisingly, AMG has confirmed that it will also be fine-tuning performance variants of this new V-8 engine.

Does this development suggest that we will witness a V-8 being reintroduced in a future high-performance variant of the E-Class or C-Class? Chamberlain mentioned that this remains unconfirmed at the moment. Like many enthusiasts, he expressed a strong desire for an E63 wagon, but the business case for such a model is questionable, considering that North America is its only substantial market. Additionally, customers already have an excellent alternative available in the E53 wagon, which benefits from a plug-in-hybrid system boosting the manufacturer’s 3.0-liter inline-six engine to produce 577 horsepower.
A similar configuration of that six-cylinder engine, delivering 443 horsepower, currently resides under the hood of the most potent CLE model to date, the Mercedes-AMG CLE53 (pictured at the top and bottom of this article). However, the CLE53 does not feature the plug-in hybrid system found in the E63 wagon. It is presumed that any CLE63 variant will generate even more power by utilizing an AMG-tuned version of the new twin-turbo V-8 engine.

Renewed North American Focus
The CLE63 model is a direct reflection of Mercedes’ renewed focus on the North American market, according to Chamberlain. In this region, V-8-powered vehicles continue to be significantly more desirable than in many other parts of the world. There are also another two or three additional products in development that are being specifically designed for the North American market, which are being built on a new platform that will presumably also be capable of supporting a V-8 engine.
This initiative is part of a major global product offensive: Mercedes-Benz, along with its Mercedes-AMG and Maybach sub-brands, plans to launch 40 vehicles within the next three years. These vehicles will encompass internal combustion engines, hybrids (including plug-in hybrids), and fully electric options.
