The Last of Its Kind: How a One-Off Mazda Protegé Defined the 2000s Tuning Ethos
Hometown: Huntington Beach, CA
Owner: John Malozsak
The Origin Story
The year is 2000. In a world where performance and aggressive aesthetics were the defining characteristics of the automotive industry, the Mazda Protegé was a standout in the compact car segment. Unlike many of its competitors, the Mazda Protegé had a reputation for its dynamic handling, nimble performance, and unique styling that separated it from the rest. It had a strong connection to motorsports that allowed Mazda to develop a loyal following among car enthusiasts who sought reliable and fun-to-drive compact vehicles that could be modified to meet their specific performance needs.
However, the automotive landscape of the early 2000s was characterized by rapid innovation and intense competition. Traditional compact car offerings from Mazda were beginning to face challenges from more technologically advanced rivals and a shifting consumer preference towards SUVs and crossover vehicles. These factors created a complex environment where established brands like Mazda needed to adapt to remain relevant and maintain a strong foothold in the market.
In this challenging environment, John Malozsak of Ballistic Unlimited saw an opportunity to push the boundaries of automotive customization. He set out to create a Mazda Protegé that would not only stand out from the crowd but also challenge the perceptions of what was possible with a compact car. The result was a custom-built vehicle that combined aggressive styling, high-end audio/video integration, and performance enhancements that had never been seen before in a vehicle of its class. This project quickly became a local legend in the Southern California tuning scene and a testament to what was possible when passion met automotive innovation.

Malozsak’s background as a designer and entrepreneur provides him with a unique perspective on how to blend fashion with automotive performance to create something truly special.
The project of building the 2000 Mazda Protegé was not just a hobby for Malozsak; it was a passion project that allowed him to showcase his skills in a unique and impactful way. By combining his experience in automotive customization, performance tuning, and design, he created a vehicle that became a symbol of innovation, style, and automotive excellence. This project not only elevated Ballistic Unlimited’s brand recognition but also cemented its place in the automotive community.
The Build: A Race Against Time
The construction of this custom 2000 Mazda Protegé was an ambitious undertaking that required precision, dedication, and a willingness to push boundaries. John Malozsak and his team worked tirelessly for four weeks to bring this vision to life, a timeframe that is often considered challenging for complex custom builds in the automotive tuning industry.
During this period, Malozsak and his team focused on executing a comprehensive plan that involved a blend of advanced audio/video technology, unique exterior styling, and performance enhancements. They installed a high-end Kenwood audio and video system that included advanced speakers, amplifiers, and monitors to provide an immersive audio experience. The commitment to detail and precision was evident throughout the build, as every component was carefully integrated to create a seamless and professional finish.
One of the most remarkable aspects of the build was the customization of the interior. Malozsak integrated a unique fiber-optic lighting system from Federal Mogul to create a stunning visual effect. This technology, inspired by aerospace applications, provided indirect lighting for the door panels and center console, while also illuminating the Mazda logos in the Cobra Sidewinder racing seats. This attention to detail transformed the interior into a premium and high-tech cockpit that was both functional and visually striking.
Engineering Performance and Precision
Under the hood of the 2000 Mazda Protegé, Malozsak installed a variety of performance upgrades to enhance the vehicle’s handling and acceleration. The stock engine was upgraded with a Monster Flew intake and air cleaner, Bosal after-cat exhaust, and Vitek ignition wires and vacuum lines. The installation of Nitrous Express 50hp wet kit and an Optima battery provided an additional boost in performance.
To enhance the vehicle’s handling, Malozsak installed Intrax springs and Axis Speed-Six wheels (19×8.25) fitted with Pirelli P7000 tires (215/35-19). The vehicle was further enhanced with a custom body kit and rear wing, louvered hood by Sir Michael’s, and lettering by Modern Image Signworks. The exterior was finished with Orange Pearl paint and a glass-bead topcoat with candy-coated headlights and taillights by Body Pros. The vehicle was also fitted with APC Sport mirrors and blue undercar neon by Matt Strange.
The interior of the vehicle was equipped with Cobra Sidewinder racing seats, Katakin Leather upgrade, Autopower rollbar, Nardi Sport steering wheel, and Federal Mogul fiber-optic lighting. The audio and video system featured a Kenwood P907 head unit (audio/video) system, LZ 700 rear monitor, KAC-X501 subamplifier, DAZ-X401 mid/high amplifier, KFC-XW100B subwoofer (x4), KFC-XR60P mid/tweet combo, and Pure Platinum F3 wiring and cables. This comprehensive suite of upgrades transformed the Mazda Protegé into a high-performance street machine that was both visually striking and acoustically impressive.
A Legacy of Customization
The custom 2000 Mazda Protegé built by John Malozsak quickly gained recognition in the automotive tuning community, often featured at Hot Import Nights and on the Super Street Tour. The unique styling and high-end audio/video integration set the vehicle apart from the competition and cemented its status as a local legend.
The significance of this project extends beyond its aesthetic appeal. The creation of this custom build also highlighted the growing importance of automotive customization and performance tuning in the early 2000s. As consumer demand for unique and personalized vehicles grew, brands like Mazda began to embrace the tuner community by offering custom accessories and performance upgrades.
Malozsak’s commitment to innovation also paved the way for future developments in automotive customization. By pushing the boundaries of what was possible with a compact car, he inspired a generation of tuners and car enthusiasts to pursue their own creative visions and explore new possibilities in automotive design and engineering.
The Future of Performance
Looking ahead, the automotive industry continues to evolve at a rapid pace. While traditional compact cars may be evolving, the spirit of innovation and customization remains as strong as ever. Malozsak and Ballistic Unlimited continue to push the boundaries of automotive customization with their next project: a custom-built Mazda Protegé5.
