002 2000 mazda protege ballistic unlimited orange custom build super street The Ballistic Pursuit: Orange, Obsession, and the Mazda Protegé That Refused to Be Ordinary In the golden era of import tuning, where the scent of gasoline mingled with the bass thumping from custom sound systems, the Mazda Protegé occupied a curious space. Often overlooked, it languished in the shadow of its sportier siblings—the RX-7 and the Miata—and its more flamboyant cousins, the Honda Civic and Integra. Yet, within the heart of the West Coast tuner scene, a vision was quietly taking shape, fueled by craftsmanship, audacity, and an almost maniacal commitment to the color orange. This is the story of a one-off 2000 Mazda Protegé that didn’t just break the mold—it obliterated it, leaving behind a legend of innovation that continues to inspire enthusiasts today. The man behind this audacious creation was John Malozsak, a visionary entrepreneur whose journey into the automotive world wasn’t born in a sterile boardroom but on the hard-packed asphalt of the Southern California tuner circuit. Owner of Ballistic Unlimited, a company known for pioneering cutting-edge apparel, Malozsak leveraged his decade-plus of industry experience to push the boundaries of what was possible in the compact performance arena. But this wasn’t just another custom car; it was a manifesto. “We didn’t just want to build a car,” Malozsak explains, reminiscing about the early 2000s build, “we wanted to create a statement. This was about showing that the Protegé wasn’t just a commuter car; it was a canvas for art.” The genesis of this iconic build was an unlikely marriage between a forgotten prototype and an owner’s relentless obsession with the color orange. Malozsak found himself in possession of a plaster mold that Mazda had originally created for a Protegé concept car. This wasn’t a commercial product; it was the blueprint for a dream that never saw the light of day. “The mold was sitting around, forgotten, likely destined for the scrap heap,” Malozsak recalls. “But I saw the potential. It was rare, it was unique, and it was the perfect starting point for something extraordinary.” Securing the mold itself was a victory in itself. Malozsak had to overcome significant bureaucratic hurdles and navigate the internal red tape at Mazda. “It wasn’t easy,” he admits with a laugh. “There were a lot of people who thought it was just an old, worthless piece of plaster. But I persisted. I convinced them it was worth saving, that it deserved to live on.” With the mold secured, Malozsak set out to create what would become one of the most distinctive and legendary Protegé builds of all time. The transformation began with the exterior. Malozsak enlisted the expertise of Sir Michael’s, renowned for their custom body work and engineering. The goal was simple: to create a silhouette that was aggressive, aerodynamic, and unmistakably Ballistic. The custom body kit featured sharp lines, flared wheel arches, and a vented hood that screamed performance. To complete the aggressive stance, a wing sourced from an early Mazda MP3 concept car was added. “The wing was another one of those rare finds,” Malozsak notes. “It was as scarce as an edible meal at Sizzler back then. But it fit perfectly with the aggressive lines of the kit.” The pièce de résistance was, of course, the color. Malozsak envisioned a vibrant orange that would turn heads and leave a lasting impression. He chose a custom Orange Pearl paint with a glass-bead topcoat, a finish that shimmered under the California sun and stood out against the backdrop of black and white Tuner cars that dominated the scene. The headlights and taillights were candy-coated, adding a depth and richness to the overall look that was truly mesmerizing. Even the mirrors were swapped for APC Sport mirrors, a nod to the high-performance aftermarket accessories that were gaining popularity at the time. But the exterior was only half the battle. Malozsak had an ambitious vision for the interior, one that combined style, comfort, and cutting-edge technology. The seats were replaced with Cobra Sidewinder racing seats, offering both support and a sport-tuned feel. A Katakin Leather upgrade was added, replacing the standard fabric with plush leather that felt luxurious to the touch. An Autopower rollbar was installed for added safety and a race-inspired look, and a Nardi Sport steering wheel provided a tactile connection between the driver and the road.
However, it was the lighting system that truly set this Protegé apart. Malozsak integrated “experimental” fiber optics from Federal Mogul, technology that was still in its infancy at the time. The Mazda logos on the seats were illuminated with a soft, ethereal glow, creating a unique and show-stopping effect. The fiber optics also illuminated the door panels and center console, adding a level of sophistication to the interior that was unheard of in custom Protegé builds. “It was like a mini disco ball,” Malozsak laughs. “We were experimenting with technology that was straight out of science fiction back then. It was a risk, but it paid off.” Beneath the hood, the 1.8L four-cylinder engine received a comprehensive overhaul. A Monster Flew intake and air cleaner were added, along with a Bosal after-cat exhaust and Vitek ignition wires and vacuum lines. Hose Techniques hoses provided a clean and durable finish, and a Nitrous Express 50hp wet kit was installed for an extra shot of power. An Optima battery provided reliable starting power, and a Jet Performance computer upgrade optimized the engine’s performance. The stiff stuff came courtesy of Intrax springs, while the rollers consisted of Axis Speed-Six wheels wrapped in Pirelli P7000 tires, giving the car an aggressive stance and improved handling. One of the most striking features of the build was the audio and video system. Malozsak installed a Kenwood P907 head unit that served as the nerve center of the system. A Kenwood LZ 700 rear monitor was mounted in the trunk, along with a KAC-X501 subamplifier and DAZ-X401 mid/high amplifier. Four KFC-XW100B subwoofers provided earth-shaking bass, while the KFC-XR60P mid/tweet combo delivered crisp, clear highs. Pure Platinum F3 wiring and cables ensured a clean and lossless signal, resulting in a sound system that was as powerful as it was precise. The craftsmanship of the audio system was evident in the custom-built enclosures that housed the speakers. These weren’t just generic boxes; they were works of art, sculpted to fit the contours of the trunk and the speakers themselves. Speaker enclosures also formed islands of sound in the doors, creating a seamless and immersive audio experience. Malozsak’s hands were directly involved in the creation of every component, a testament to his dedication and passion for the project. “It took four weeks to put this entire thing together,” he recalls. “Super Street can barely print a magazine in four weeks, let alone build a custom car with this level of detail. But we did it.” The Ballistic Unlimited Protegé wasn’t just a project car; it was a lifestyle. Malozsak took the car to Hot Import Nights, the Super Street Tour, and other tuner events, where it consistently turned heads and garnered rave reviews. The orange paint glowed under the spotlight, the fiber optics illuminated the interior, and the sound system throbbed with energy. It was a showstopper, a conversation starter, and a testament to the power of dedication and creativity. The impact of this build extends far beyond the pages of Super Street. It proved that the Mazda Protegé, often dismissed as a mundane economy car, possessed the potential to be something extraordinary. It inspired a generation of tuners to look beyond the obvious and to see the hidden beauty in unexpected places. It demonstrated that with enough passion, creativity, and a willingness to break the rules, anything is possible. In recent years, as the automotive landscape has continued to evolve, the Ballistic Unlimited Protegé remains a poignant reminder of a time when the import tuning scene was defined by raw passion, groundbreaking innovation, and a healthy dose of orange. While the car may no longer grace the pages of magazines, its legacy lives on in the memories of those who witnessed it and in the countless builds that have been inspired by its audacity. It stands as a testament to the fact that true innovation often comes from the most unexpected places, proving that sometimes, the brightest colors are found not in the mainstream but in the shadows, waiting to be discovered by those willing to look beyond the mold. The story of this orange Protegé is a microcosm of the evolution of automotive culture. It represents a transition from the purely aesthetic-driven builds of the early 2000s to the more sophisticated, technologically advanced creations of today. Yet, despite the changes, the core spirit of this build remains the same—the passion for cars, the drive to push boundaries, and the unwavering commitment to creating something unique and unforgettable. As we look back on this iconic build, it’s important to remember that the world of custom cars is constantly moving forward. While we may never see another Ballistic Unlimited Protegé quite like this one, the legacy of this car continues to inspire us to continue exploring, innovating, and creating cars that challenge expectations and redefine what’s possible. The orange glow may have faded, but the spirit of the Ballistic Pursuit lives on, a reminder that the most iconic builds are not just cars, but legends that continue to shape the automotive landscape for years to come.
