In late March, reports surfaced regarding a safety recall initiated by Hyundai for its 2026 Palisade, specifically targeting the Limited and Calligraphy trim levels of both the standard and hybrid models. The issue centered on the rear-seat sensor system, which was found to be incapable of accurately detecting passengers and objects, resulting in a critical safety hazard. Tragically, prior to the issuance of a permanent fix, a single fatality and four minor injuries were reported. However, Hyundai has now announced that a software revision has been released, and owners will have the option to download it via an over-the-air (OTA) update, provided they have an active Bluelink subscription. Alternatively, owners can visit their local dealership for the software to be installed in their three-row SUV in person.
As detailed in our previous coverage, Hyundai had previously distributed a temporary software update designed to mitigate the risk of injury by reprogramming the powered rear-seat functionality. Nevertheless, that update was never intended to serve as a permanent, certified solution. As of April 3, 2026, a comprehensive software update has been officially released. This update addresses the root cause of the problem, preventing suffocation and other injuries that could result from the inadvertent activation of the powered second- and third-row seats’ folding and tilt (referred to by Hyundai as the “walk-in”) functions.

What Has Changed to Prevent This from Happening Again?
The software update to the powered seating system introduces significant modifications to the way folding and tilt functions are activated and where they can be engaged. It also enhances occupant and object detection capabilities. Firstly, the controls for folding and stowing the seats have been disabled within the infotainment system interface. Secondly, the switches located on the seats and in the cargo area will now necessitate a press-and-hold operation, eliminating the possibility of one-touch folding.
Furthermore, the second-row tilt function will also require a hold of the button, although the one-touch function will remain available for the return command. Users will also need to press and hold the button for seat-back reclining during the return operation. The software has also been updated to improve seat logic, allowing it to detect a person or object within the seat and immediately cease the folding and tilting functions before they are fully completed. Finally, the liftgate must be open in order to utilize the fold-flat seat stowage function.

What About the Kia Telluride That Is Also Under Recall?
As of this moment, Kia has not yet officially released a software update for the powered second-row seats on its 2027 Telluride Hybrid SX Prestige and the X-Line SX Prestige with the Executive package. We have contacted Kia seeking additional information and will update this story once a response is received. In the interim, owners of these Telluride models should exercise extreme caution and monitor second-row occupancy whenever utilizing the tilt and folding functions.
Get This Recall Done ASAP
With any recall action, the software update will be provided free of charge to owners of affected Hyundai Palisades. For owners who need to visit a dealer to receive the update, the dealership will also be able to provide guidance on the earliest available appointment time for this repair. Dealerships should also be able to assist with rental and/or transportation while the vehicle is being serviced, but affected customers should consult Hyundai’s rental reimbursement agreement for recall repairs.
