PORSCHE enthusiasts in the US take note – A massive air-cooled Porsche gathering is happening in Japan
For Japanese car lovers, attending an auto show like the Tokyo Auto Salon or Osaka Auto Messe is common. Pilgrimages to garages and eating tons of convenience store food are also standard fare. This year, though, there was an extra special event in the heart of Tokyo featuring an amazing collection of Porsches.
For the first time ever, Luftgekühlt—the growing event series celebrating everything air-cooled Porsche—expanded to Japan, taking over the now-decommissioned KK Line. This elevated highway once linked Tokyo’s Kyobashi and Shimbashi districts. For one day, it was transformed into a celebration of German air-cooled Porsche culture, but with a distinct Japanese flair. What was once a busy commuter route became something else entirely: an exhibition of some 220 cars, attracting 11,600 people, and offering a completely new way to experience both Tokyo and Porsche history.
As you would expect, Luft Tokyo was an incredible showcase of classic Porsches, featuring everything from legendary race cars to custom street builds. One standout was the No. 28 Porsche 910, driven by Tetsu Ikuzawa, which placed second overall and first in class at the 1968 Japanese Grand Prix. But for those more interested in street cars, the Auto Garage TBK demo car was arguably the star of the show. It fit right in on the KK Line, where it stood on display rather than speeding by on a high-performance run.
Arguably the coolest aspect of Luft Tokyo was extending the event into the evening. This completely transformed the atmosphere. What began as a clean, almost gallery-like show slowly evolved into the kind of underground, after-dark experience that only Tokyo could provide. Illest and Fatlace founder Mark Arcenal was there and was amazed by the event. “Luft Tokyo was a once-in-a-lifetime experience that I don’t think will ever be duplicated as that area of freeway will turn into retail and a park, I believe,” Arcenal said. “Glad to experience it and see some of the coolest cars around Tokyo.”
By combining a historically significant location, a carefully chosen mix of cars, and an experience that evolved significantly from day to night, Luftgekühlt Tokyo offered something different from the usual Japanese show circuit. As the Porsches finally dispersed into the night and the KK Line returned to its eerily quiet state, it was time for a famchiki or two at the convenience store.
