N2704014_found little guy standing helplessly in mi The 2026 Kia Telluride Hybrid vs. 2027 Hyundai Palisade Hybrid Comparison: Same DNA, Different Personalities We compare the hybrid versions of the Kia Telluride and Hyundai Palisade to find out how these two closely related SUVs differ in real-world driving. Miguel Cortina Writer William Walker Photographer April 06, 2026 The Kia Telluride and Hyundai Palisade share their architecture, powertrain, wheelbase, and dimensions, yet they exude distinct personalities. The Telluride embodies a rugged, upscale adventurer, while the Palisade offers a softer, more indulgent experience.
Both models enter their second generation, following highly successful debuts. The Telluride earned MotorTrend’s 2020 SUV of the Year award, and the Palisade consistently ranks as a favorite, even being named the best three-row SUV following its midcycle update. For this comparison, we tested the 2026 Hyundai Palisade Hybrid Calligraphy AWD and the 2027 Kia Telluride Hybrid SX-Prestige AWD in Southern California. This region, known for its shifting topography, provided an ideal testing ground with its winding roads, city streets, highway stretches, and rough pavement shaped by landslides and minor earthquakes. We evaluated their space, ease of access to the third row, and the functionality of their infotainment and advanced driver assistance systems. Ultimately, the decision was close. Both Kia and Hyundai have produced outstanding models, and choosing the better option was not straightforward. But First, Some Context We compare the top trims of both vehicles: the 2026 Hyundai Palisade Hybrid Calligraphy AWD and the 2027 Kia Telluride Hybrid SX-Prestige AWD. Both are powered by a 2.5-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine and two electric motors, delivering 329 horsepower and 339 lb-ft of torque through a six-speed automatic transmission to all four wheels. The Palisade is priced at $60,625, slightly more than the Telluride’s $60,210. While neither is a budget vehicle, a $60,000 three-row hybrid SUV is becoming increasingly common. Notably, the Telluride is built in West Point, Georgia, while the Palisade is manufactured in Ulsan, South Korea. Front Row Revelations Despite their shared platform, the interiors of the Telluride and Palisade diverge significantly, particularly in the front row. The Kia adopts a midcentury modern aesthetic characterized by minimalism and elegance. The materials quality is impressive: supple leather, an Alcantara headliner that rivals luxury brands, and wood-look trim that feels genuinely premium. The downside to the Telluride’s interior is its limited use of physical controls. The center console features just four climate control buttons; the remaining HVAC functions are housed in a panel between the driver’s instrument cluster and the infotainment screen. This placement makes them awkward to operate, partially obscured by the steering wheel from the driver’s perspective and a stretch from the passenger seat. While it’s a clever use of unused space, it compromises functionality. The Palisade’s interior feels more inviting, described by features editor Christian Seabaugh as “a home’s living room rather than an airliner. The design is unique, special, and its own thing. It’s the type of design that’s going to make the Palisade feel like an escape from the outside world, not part of the problem.” He is correct; the design is less minimalist than the Telluride’s and approaches luxury in a warmer, more contemporary manner. A key aspect of the Palisade’s welcoming feel is its control layout. All HVAC functions are consolidated in one accessible location for both occupants. The capacitive touch controls can feel slightly crowded, but we still prefer this setup to the Kia’s approach. Additionally, the Palisade includes both volume and tuning knobs, whereas the Telluride offers only the former. Both interiors provide three conveniently placed USB-C ports, but the Telluride adds a second wireless charging pad to the Palisade’s single unit. Hyundai offers a distinct feature: a UV-C sterilization compartment in the center console that can sanitize phones, keys, and wallets in approximately 10 minutes—something the Kia lacks. What to Know About the Rear Seats Both test vehicles came equipped with second-row captain’s chairs, seating seven passengers in total. Comfort is excellent in both SUVs, and they feature thoughtfully placed USB ports on the back of the front seats. Panoramic sunroofs in both models enhance the sense of openness. Accessing the third row is relatively easy in both the Telluride and Palisade due to second-row seats that slide forward at the touch of a button. The opening between the C-pillar and the seat is wide enough for most adults. Once seated, legroom is respectable. The Palisade holds an advantage, however, as its third row can recline and slide forward and back. This flexibility compromises cargo space but offers a noticeable improvement in comfort, especially for adults on longer journeys when the cargo area is not fully utilized. The Palisade is also the only model with a power-folding third row, which is convenient when moving seats with your hands full. In the Telluride, a strap releases the latch to fold the seat, which must then be pulled until it locks. While not difficult, we prefer the simplicity of a button press. One significant concern regarding convenience is the recall of Palisades with powered second- and third-row seats following the tragic death of a child. Hyundai has recalled these models, and Kia has subsequently recalled Tellurides equipped with powered second-row seats. Cabin Technology Features
Examining the infotainment systems reveals few meaningful differences. Both SUVs share essentially the same technology, with slight variations. The Kia offers built-in streaming apps like YouTube, Disney+, and live TV on its main screen, while the Palisade counters with an integrated front and rear dashcam. Both SUVs feature a dual 12.3-inch display setup, with one screen for the driver and the other for infotainment. Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are standard, along with built-in navigation and a head-up display. They also provide seven USB-C ports across all three rows, massaging front seats, and a digital key. While the Telluride has a slight technology edge due to its ability to stream video on the infotainment screen while parked, some buyers might find the Palisade’s built-in dashcam more useful. Kia’s data subscription service costs approximately $40 per month, while the Palisade’s dashcam requires no additional subscription. In the end, both infotainment systems are fundamentally similar, and the choice depends on individual priorities. Telluride and Palisade Safety Features Hyundai and Kia have made substantial progress in advanced driver assistance systems. In both SUVs, adaptive cruise control and lane keep assist function flawlessly, maintaining a safe distance from traffic ahead on the highway. Given that these vehicles share safety technologies, their behavior on the road is virtually identical. During our driving loops, we did not observe any meaningful differences in system performance, though we appreciated their smooth operation and ease of engagement. Impressive Hybrid Fuel Economy Despite sharing the same powertrain, the Telluride is slightly more efficient than the Palisade. The Kia achieves 30/32/31 mpg (city/highway/combined), compared to the Palisade’s 29/30/29 mpg. This minor difference is likely due to wheel size, as the Palisade features 21-inch wheels while the Telluride utilizes 20-inch wheels. How Each Model Rides and Handles One area where the Kia and Hyundai diverge (apart from styling) is ride and handling. Each brand has its own engineering team, resulting in subtle differences that shape their distinct personalities. We found the Palisade rides slightly better than the Telluride, displaying greater composure over uneven pavement. This difference was most evident on the rough, undulating roads near Palos Verdes. The Palisade glides smoothly, while the Telluride lets more of the road’s imperfections enter the cabin. The Telluride’s steering also requires slightly more effort off-center. As Seabaugh noted, it “lacked the smooth, confidence-inspiring torque buildup.” While perfectly adequate for its class, the Palisade’s steering feels more natural when driven back-to-back. With the same hybridized 2.5-liter turbocharged four-cylinder and six-speed automatic combination, both SUVs perform similarly in everyday driving. Around town and on freeway merges, both feel responsive with enough torque to handle hills and acceleration without drama. Power delivery from the hybrid system is smooth and consistent. At the test track, their performance metrics are nearly identical. Both reach 60 mph in 6.6 seconds, but the Telluride finishes the quarter mile in 14.9 seconds at 96.0 mph—slightly faster than the Palisade by 0.1 second and 0.1 mph. The differences are more pronounced in braking performance. The Telluride’s brakes lack the progressive feel of the Palisade, requiring more pedal effort to stop. The numbers support this: the Palisade stops from 60 mph in 122 feet, while the Telluride requires 125 feet. Although the gap is small, it can make a difference in real-world driving. Palisade vs. Telluride: The Verdict There is no wrong choice between these two SUVs; however, there is a better option. Both models fulfill the expectations of families seeking a spacious, technologically advanced, and safe hybrid SUV. The differentiation lies in their execution.
And that’s where the Palisade pulls ever so slightly ahead. It rides with more composure, feels more refined from
