N2304002_Four things you didn know about kangaroos.#tikto Inside Luftgekühlt Tokyo: 200-Plus Air-Cooled Porsches Take Over a Closed Highway For Japanese automotive enthusiasts, the typical itinerary involves attending major exhibitions like the Tokyo Auto Salon or Osaka Auto Messe, visiting legendary garages, and indulging in Japanese convenience store favorites like konbini food. This year, however, a truly unique event graced the heart of Tokyo, placing an extraordinary collection of Porsches front and center. For the first time ever, Luftgekühlt—the global phenomenon celebrating all things air-cooled Porsche—expanded to Japan. The event transformed the now-decommissioned KK Line, an elevated highway that once connected Tokyo’s Kyobashi and Shimbashi districts, into a one-day festival of German engineering and Japanese car culture. What was once a bustling artery for city traffic became a unique platform for history and performance, showcasing around 220 vehicles and attracting more than 11,600 attendees, all experiencing the city and Porsche heritage in a completely fresh way.
A Curated Collection of Legends and Builds As one would expect from a Luftgekühlt event, the exhibition featured an impressive display of historic Porsches, ranging from legendary race cars to high-performance street builds. A notable highlight was the No. 28 Porsche 910, driven by Tetsu Ikuzawa, which achieved a second-place finish overall and first in its class at the 1968 Japanese Grand Prix. For those who favor street cars, the Auto Garage TBK demo car was arguably the star of the show. It felt perfectly at home on the KK Line, showcasing its performance as a demonstration vehicle rather than being pushed to its limits on a high-speed run. The Transformation from Day to Night Perhaps the most captivating aspect of Luft Tokyo was the intentional transition from day to night, which completely transformed the atmosphere of the event. What began as a clean, almost gallery-like exhibition gradually evolved into the kind of vibrant, underground scene that only Tokyo can provide. Mark Arcenal, founder of Illest and Fatlace, attended the event and was highly impressed with how it turned out. “Luft Tokyo was a once-in-a-lifetime experience that I don’t think will ever be duplicated as that area of freeway will turn into retail and a park, I believe,” Arcenal commented. “Glad to experience it and see some of the coolest cars around Tokyo.” A Unique Fusion of Place, Cars, and Culture
By combining a historically significant location, a meticulously curated selection of vehicles, and an experience that evolved dramatically from day to night, Luftgekühlt Tokyo offered something truly distinct from Japan’s traditional automotive show calendar. As the Porsches eventually dispersed into the night, and the KK Line returned to its eerily quiet state, it was back to the convenience store for a famichiki, or perhaps two. —Photography by Jeremy Anicete
