Hyundai and Kia share a foundational lineage as sister brands, and nowhere is this relationship more evident than in their popular three-row SUVs, the Hyundai Palisade and Kia Telluride. These vehicles share the same architecture, powertrain, wheelbase, and technological foundation. Their dimensions are also virtually identical. However, where these two vehicles genuinely diverge lies in their underlying personalities. The Kia Telluride embodies the aesthetic of a rugged, upscale adventurer, while the Hyundai Palisade leans into a softer, more luxurious, and accommodating vibe.
Both models have entered their second generation, significantly overdelivering from their initial launch. The Kia Telluride immediately made a profound impact, earning MotorTrend’s 2020 SUV of the Year award in its debut year. The Palisade has consistently remained a strong contender; we even recognized it as the best three-row SUV you could purchase following its midcycle update.
The Driving Experience on the Palos Verdes Peninsula
To properly compare these two vehicles, we ventured to the rugged landscape of the Palos Verdes Peninsula in Southern California. This unique location, renowned for its seismic activity and tectonic shifts, offered a challenging backdrop for our evaluation, featuring a combination of winding coastal roads, city streets, highway stretches, and even sections of rough pavement affected by landslides and minor earthquakes. Throughout our journey, we meticulously assessed the interior space across all three rows, the ease of access to the third row, and the performance of their respective infotainment and advanced driver assistance systems.
Spoiler alert: This comparison was exceptionally close. Both Kia and Hyundai have delivered standout models that offer considerable value and utility. However, in our testing, we do not accept ties. After a comprehensive and rigorous evaluation, one model ultimately edged out the other. As might be expected, the decision was far from straightforward.
Understanding the Context
For this comparison, we evaluated the 2026 Hyundai Palisade Hybrid Calligraphy AWD against the 2027 Kia Telluride Hybrid SX-Prestige AWD. Both models represent the pinnacle of their respective lineups and are powered by a 2.5-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine paired with two electric motors, combining to deliver a robust 329 hp and 339 lb-ft of torque. This power is channeled through a six-speed automatic transmission to all four wheels.
The Hyundai Palisade price starts at approximately $60,625, while the Kia undercuts it slightly at $60,210. Neither vehicle is definitively affordable, but in the current automotive market, considering a $60,000 three-row hybrid SUV is becoming increasingly commonplace. A crucial distinction: the 2026 Hyundai Palisade for sale is imported from Ulsan, South Korea, whereas the 2027 Kia Telluride release is manufactured in West Point, Georgia.
Front Row Revelations
Although these SUVs share fundamental architecture, spending time inside their cabins reveals significant differences, particularly in the front row. The Kia adopts a midcentury modern aesthetic that is both minimal and elegant. The materials quality is exceptional throughout; the leather is supple, the Alcantara headliner possesses a luxurious feel akin to a Bentley, and the wood-look trim across the dashboard and center console exudes a genuinely premium character.
One drawback to the Telluride’s interior is its reliance on physical controls. The center console features only four buttons for the climate system, with the remainder of the HVAC controls located on a panel situated between the driver’s instrument display and the infotainment screen. This placement makes the controls awkward to access, as it is partially obscured by the steering wheel from the driver’s perspective and requires a significant reach from the passenger seat. While it is a clever use of otherwise dead space, it is not the most practical solution for day-to-day use.
The 2026 Hyundai Palisade interior, on the other hand, feels more welcoming and intuitive. Features editor Christian Seabaugh described the cabin as “a home’s living room rather than an airliner. The design is unique, special, and its own thing. It’s the type of design that’s going to make the Palisade feel like an escape from the outside world, not part of the problem.” He is undoubtedly correct. The Palisade is less minimalist than the Telluride and approaches luxury in a warmer, more contemporary style.
Part of what contributes to the Palisade’s welcoming interior is its control layout. All the HVAC functions are grouped in one place and are easily accessible to both the driver and front passenger. The capacitive touch controls can feel somewhat crowded, but we still prefer this arrangement over the Kia’s. The Palisade also benefits from both volume and tuning knobs, while the Telluride provides only the former.
Both interiors offer three conveniently placed USB-C ports, but the Telluride includes a second wireless charging pad compared to the Palisade’s single pad. The Hyundai counters with an innovative feature: a UV-C sterilization compartment in the center console that can sanitize your phone, keys, or wallet in approximately ten minutes, something the Kia does not offer.
What to Know About the Rear Seats
Both of our Korean hybrid test vehicles came equipped with second-row captain’s chairs, meaning they seat a total of seven passengers. Comfort is excellent in either SUV, and both feature thoughtfully placed USB ports on the backs of the front seats for convenient access. Panoramic sunroofs in both models also help to brighten the cabin and enhance the sense of openness.
Accessing the third row is relatively easy in both the Telluride and Palisade, thanks to second-row seats that slide forward at the touch of a button. The opening between the C-pillar and the seat is wide enough for most adults to squeeze through, and once seated, legroom is respectable. The 2026 Hyundai Palisade seats, however, have a clear advantage because their third row can recline and slide fore and aft. This flexibility can encroach upon cargo space, but it provides a noticeable difference in comfort, especially for adults during longer journeys when the cargo area is not fully utilized.
The 2026 Hyundai Palisade power third row is also the only one that offers an electric folding mechanism, which proves extremely useful when you have your hands full while raising or lowering the seats. In the Telluride, a strap releases the latch to fold the seat, and you must use the same strap to pull it back up until it locks into place. While not difficult, we would prefer the convenience of pressing a button and letting the Hyundai Palisade handle the work. A significant caveat to that convenience exists: the Hyundai Palisade recalls involving powered second- and third-row seats have been subject to a stop-sale and recall spurred by a tragic incident involving a child. Hyundai has recalled Palisades equipped with powered second- and third-row seats, and Kia has subsequently recalled Tellurides equipped with powered second-row seats.
Cabin Technology Features
Looking closely at their 2026 Hyundai Palisade Hybrid infotainment systems, you would struggle to identify any meaningful differences. Both SUVs share essentially the same technology, with only a few unique features to differentiate them. The Kia offers built-in streaming apps such as YouTube, Disney+, and even live TV on its main screen, while the 2026 Hyundai Palisade infotainment screen counters with an integrated front and rear dashcam.
Both SUVs feature a dual 12.3-inch display setup, with one screen dedicated to the driver and the other for infotainment. Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto come standard, along with built-in navigation and a head-up display. They also offer seven USB-C ports spread across all three rows, massaging front seats, and a digital key.
While the Telluride has a slight edge on the technology front, largely due to its ability to stream video on the infotainment screen when parked, some buyers may find the Palisade’s built-in dashcam more useful and a better value, as Kia’s data subscription service costs around $40 per month. In the end, both infotainment systems are fundamentally similar, and the choice comes down to what you value more.
2026 Hyundai Palisade vs. 2026 Kia Telluride Safety Features
Hyundai and Kia have made substantial advancements in advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS). In both SUVs, adaptive cruise control and lane keep assist operated flawlessly, keeping the vehicles centered in their lanes while maintaining a safe but not overly conservative distance from traffic ahead on the highway.
Because these vehicles share safety technologies, their behavior on the road is virtually identical. Throughout our drive loops, we did not notice any meaningful differences in how the systems performed, but we did appreciate their smooth execution and how easy it is to engage both adaptive cruise control and lane keep assist.
Impressive Hybrid Fuel Economy
Despite utilizing the same 2026 Hyundai Palisade Hybrid powertrain, the 2027 Kia Telluride fuel economy is slightly better. The Kia is rated at 30/32/31 mpg city/highway/combined, compared to the Palisade’s 29/30/29 mpg. The difference is almost certainly attributable to wheel size, as the Palisade rides on 21-inch wheels while the Telluride uses 20s. For 2027 Kia Telluride price, this slight edge in fuel efficiency does not significantly change the overall value proposition.
