The Roar Returns: Mercedes-AMG CLE63 V8 Engine for the American Market
In a move that underscores the continued significance of the North American luxury and performance segment, Mercedes-Benz has confirmed that an all-new Mercedes-AMG CLE63 is on the horizon. This high-performance variant of the CLE coupe and convertible will be powered by an entirely new family of V-8 engines, designed with a specific focus on the evolving demands and preferences of American consumers.
The announcement, made by company leadership at the recent global premiere of the updated 2027 Mercedes-Benz GLE and GLS SUVs, has generated significant excitement within the automotive industry. While official timelines and performance specifications for the Mercedes-AMG CLE63 remain under wraps, industry insiders and company executives have confirmed the vehicle’s existence and its unique position within Mercedes’ broader global product offensive.
A Dedicated American Investment
One of the most telling aspects of this development is the strategic decision to build the CLE63 with North America as its primary market. According to Adam Chamberlain, CEO of Mercedes-Benz USA, an estimated 95 percent of Mercedes-AMG CLE63 sales are expected to originate from this region. This data-driven approach reflects a fundamental shift in how Mercedes-Benz is tailoring its highest-performance offerings to align with market demand, particularly in the United States where the appetite for V-8 powered cars and high-performance SUVs continues to thrive.
Chamberlain emphasized that the new Mercedes-AMG CLE63 will be developed as an “American-spec car,” ensuring it meets the specific driving conditions, regulatory requirements, and consumer expectations prevalent in the U.S. market. This level of customization signals a strong commitment to the region and a recognition that the North American market remains a stronghold for premium performance vehicles featuring combustion engines.
“The CLE63 is a reflection of Mercedes’ renewed focus on North America,” Chamberlain noted. “There are another two or three products coming as well that are being developed specifically for North America, which are being built on a new platform that will also presumably be able to support a V-8.”
This commitment extends beyond the Mercedes-AMG CLE63 itself. It is part of a broader global product strategy that includes 40 new vehicles across Mercedes-Benz, Mercedes-AMG, and Maybach brands within the next three years. This ambitious roadmap encompasses a diverse range of powertrain technologies, including internal combustion engines, hybrids, plug-in hybrids, and fully electric vehicles.
The New V-8 Engine: Power Meets Efficiency
At the heart of the upcoming Mercedes-AMG CLE63 is a revolutionary new V-8 engine family. Mercedes-Benz has engineered these new powerplants to deliver exceptional performance while adhering to increasingly stringent emissions regulations.
The cornerstone of this new engine family is a 4.0-liter twin-turbo V-8 featuring a flat-plane crankshaft. This specific engine configuration has already debuted in the new 2027 S-Class, setting a benchmark for quiet, smooth, and dominant performance in the luxury segment. The same engine will also power the upcoming 2027 Mercedes-Benz GLE580 and 2027 GLS580 SUVs, both of which recently made their global premieres.
In the 2027 S-Class, the 4.0-liter twin-turbo V-8 produces an impressive 530 horsepower and 553 lb-ft of torque. While official figures for the Mercedes-AMG CLE63 are yet to be released, AMG has confirmed that it will be developing performance variants of this new engine. This suggests that the Mercedes-AMG CLE63 will receive a tuned version of the twin-turbo engine, likely with higher output figures to justify its AMG designation.
Ola Källenius, Chairman of the Board of Management and CEO of Mercedes-Benz Group, highlighted the significance of investing in V-8s for the American market.
“Investing in V-8s shows a real commitment to the powerplant,” Källenius told MotorTrend. “More broadly, it shows a commitment to meeting the needs of its U.S. customers, where the V-8 has been a staple in high-end and high-performance Mercedes vehicles for decades.”
Källenius described the standard V-8 in the new S-Class as a “wolf in sheep’s clothing,” providing dominant power without being ostentatious. However, he made it clear that the AMG version will unleash the full beast.
“That is the wolf in sheep’s clothing,” Källenius said. “But then the wolf really comes out with the AMG version, so there will be a wolf and an Alpha wolf coming,” he continued. “V-8 fans in the U.S. are absolutely going to love that.”
The development of the new 4.0-liter V-8 reflects a broader trend in the automotive industry, where manufacturers are seeking to balance performance with fuel efficiency and emissions reduction. The flat-plane crank design typically allows for higher revving and a more aggressive engine note, characteristics that are highly valued in high-performance SUVs and luxury coupes.
Where the New V-8 Fits in the Lineup
The introduction of the Mercedes-AMG CLE63 with a V-8 engine raises questions about the future of other high-performance models in the Mercedes-Benz lineup, such as the E-Class and C-Class.
Chamberlain was unable to confirm whether a V-8 would be offered in a future high-performance E-Class or C-Class. He admitted a personal desire for an E63 wagon, but noted that the business case is questionable given that North America would be its only real market.
“Like many enthusiasts, he’d love an E63 wagon, but the business case is questionable with North America as its only real market,” Chamberlain stated. “And buyers already have a good option in the E53 wagon, which is powered by plug-in-hybrid-boosted version of the automaker’s 3.0-liter inline-six with 577 hp.”
A similar inline-six engine with 443 horsepower is currently available in the most powerful CLE model, the 2027 Mercedes-Benz CLE53 (pictured at the top and bottom). This engine, while powerful, does not utilize a plug-in hybrid system like the E53 wagon. It is presumed that any CLE63 will generate more power from an AMG-tuned version of the new twin-turbo V-8.
The 2027 Mercedes-Benz CLE53 already offers a compelling package with its 3.0-liter inline-six engine and 443 horsepower. However, the addition of a V-8 engine in the Mercedes-AMG CLE63 will undoubtedly elevate performance to a new level, appealing to buyers who seek the ultimate driving experience.
CLE53 Coupe: The Perfect Prelude
For enthusiasts eagerly awaiting the Mercedes-AMG CLE63, the 2027 Mercedes-Benz CLE53 coupe offers a tantalizing glimpse into what to expect. With its stunning design, advanced technology, and engaging driving dynamics, the CLE53 serves as an excellent foundation for the upcoming AMG model.
The CLE53 is equipped with the 3.0-liter inline-six engine, which provides a thrilling blend of power and refinement. This engine is a marvel of modern engineering, combining forced induction with mild-hybrid technology to deliver instant torque and smooth acceleration.
The exterior design of the CLE53 is characterized by flowing lines, muscular proportions, and a signature Mercedes-Benz grille that exudes confidence and presence. The interior is equally impressive, featuring premium materials, cutting-edge technology, and a driver-focused cockpit that enhances the overall driving experience.
