Wekfest New Jersey 2026: A Japanese Car Culture Deep Dive
By Daijiro Davila | Photos by Daijiro Davila and Jorge Davila
Two years following my first immersion into Wekfest USA, I recently had the privilege of once again traversing the landscape of this enduring exhibition, a globally recognized convergence of high-performance Japanese automotive icons. Since its inception by Kenneth Li in 2008, Wekfest has cemented its status as a linchpin of the global tuner culture, renowned for its unwavering commitment to JDM and modified import aesthetics, consistently showcasing some of the nation’s most exceptional builds.
This year’s engagement in Edison, New Jersey, marked a palpable evolution in the show’s curation. The dominion of Honda was striking; for every Toyota, Nissan, or Porsche present, there seemed to be a cohort of Hondas, each illustrating the profound depth and sheer diversity of the brand’s tuning ecosystem.
As a dedicated advocate of the Honda marque since my youth, I found myself in a familiar and exhilarating environment. The subsequent analysis delineates some of the most captivating examples that captured the attention of both the attending public and myself at Wekfest USA 2025, each representing the extraordinary level of dedication and precision that define this iconic automotive event.
The Monarch of the Honda Display: A Singular NSX
Among the remarkable roster of vehicles on display, the 1992 Acura NSX owned by Marby Enriquez stood out as a singular triumph, exemplifying the transformative journey of Honda’s legendary mid-engine sports car into a highly specialized time attack weapon. After initial exposure to the NSX in its pristine factory specification, Enriquez embarked on an ambitious transformation intended to elevate both its performance envelope and visual presence.
The vehicle has been adorned with a stunning blue vinyl wrap, complemented by a classic Comptech Whipple supercharger kit, upgraded Walbro 255 fuel delivery hardware, and a snorkel-style air intake inspired by the exclusive Japanese-market NSX-R GT variant. The visual impact is immediate, amplified by a carbon-fiber hood featuring a functional ram air scoop, designed to channel pressurized cool air directly into the powerplant.

Performance metrics recorded on the dyno were impressive, with the chassis yielding 380 horsepower and 270 pound-feet of torque at the wheels. This power is managed through a robust suspension system featuring KW Clubsport adjustable coil-overs, enhanced lateral rigidity provided by titanium chassis bracing, lightweight Volk Racing TE37 alloy wheels shod with sticky Toyo Proxes R888R tires, and high-performance StopTech brake calipers paired with Hawk performance brake pads. Stability at elevated velocities is ensured by a substantial Voltex Type 4/5 GT carbon-fiber rear wing.
While the vehicle has undergone additional refinements since its feature in a 2020 publication—notably sporting polished silver wheels and a subtly redesigned front splitter—Enriquez’s NSX remains a compelling demonstration of the precise engineering and meticulous craftsmanship inherent in the construction of these phenomenal automobiles.

The Quirky Utility Champion: A Kei Car Turned Micro-Monster
The Honda N-BOX represents a paradigm of the kei car segment, a classification of vehicles mandated by Japanese regulatory frameworks to adhere to stringent size and engine displacement limitations. These vehicles, even in their enlarged configuration, are significantly smaller than an average compact coupe, with piston displacement typically capped at approximately 660cc.
This particular N-BOX exemplifies an uninhibited embrace of its minivan-derived form factor, offering a distinctive fusion of functionality and character. Finished in the sportier Custom variant, it commands attention with an assertive front fascia and a cubist silhouette that evokes memories of Honda’s earlier Element. A particularly noteworthy detail is the bespoke license plate bearing the inscription “K24 NA.” Whether the owner successfully integrated a 2.4-liter K24 inline-four engine—nearly four times the displacement of the standard N-BOX powertrain—beneath its hood remains a subject of speculation, yet the vehicle commanded attention as a uniquely Japanese creation showcased on American soil.

Vehicles such as this N-BOX underscore the profound diversity and innovative spirit that defines the Wekfest environment. In juxtaposition to the unconventional kei car were several other distinctive projects, including a lowered Element with a striking blue interior and a high-output rear audio system, as well as a pair of modified Acura MDX sport utility vehicles—rare specimens that underscored the broad spectrum of altered models on display.

The Auto Salon Aspirant: Precision Engineering and Purposeful Execution
This example of the Honda S2000 exemplifies precision engineering and purpose-driven execution, a build executed with remarkable attention to detail and aesthetic finesse. Beneath the hood, its F22C1 engine has been augmented with a judicious selection of performance components sourced from premium tuning houses, including Mugen, ASM, and HKS, crowned by a distinctive, factory-original Jun valve cover that whispers of high-end Japanese engine building.

The meticulous craftsmanship extends far beyond the engine bay. The chassis rides on performance-tuned Advan wheels wrapped in aggressive Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 tires, utilizes high-performance Renegade Motorsports brakes, and features a race-inspired Voltex rear wing paired with an ASM racing steering wheel, with each component selected to achieve a harmonious balance of performance and visual appeal. Among the multitude of S2000s exhibited at Wekfest 2025, this particular example stood out as the most complete and cohesive build—a machine that would appear equally at home on the highly competitive display stands of the Tokyo Auto Salon as it would be executing aggressive maneuvers on a closed circuit.

Among other visual highlights were detailed scale model cars displayed in front of their full-size counterparts and a vibrantly liveried Honda Motocompacto electric scooter parked adjacent to a sixth-generation Civic hatchback. This sixth-generation Civic paid homage to its heritage with an original 1960s Honda badge on its rear, featuring the broad-top “H” emblem design that inspired the brand’s contemporary 0 Series electric vehicle logo.

The Ingenious Swap: Civic Hatchback Meets Prelude Power
Amidst the dazzle of wild creations and pulsating LED lighting, a single, understated silver Civic distinguished itself not through visual excess but through the powertrain inhabiting its engine bay: the only H-series engine we encountered during the entire exhibition. The H-series, often eclipsed by the legendary B-series, served as Honda’s torquey, reliable workhorse that powered venerable models such as the Prelude Type S and the Accord Euro R. Witnessing this robust engine transversely mounted within an unassuming EG generation Civic hatchback proved to be a refreshing and uncommon sight. It is noteworthy that the owner of this Civic has possessed this EG chassis for more than two decades, and the H22 motor housed within it has remained in the vehicle for almost the exact duration of ownership. This build was never intended to attract attention through flashiness; instead, it represented pure, unadulterated functionality.

The Pinnacle of Performance: A Rare Mugen RR Exhibition
And finally, the absolute crown jewel of the Honda segment at the exhibition. Positioned near the far periphery of the Wekfest exhibition floor was a pristine FD2 Civic Type R finished in the iconic Championship White, but sharing the stage was something even rarer: the Mugen RR.
Regarded by automotive purists as the definitive iteration of the Type R, all 300 units of the Mugen RR sold out in approximately ten minutes after their official release, with 299 cars remaining exclusively within the Japanese domestic market and a single unit exported to Malaysia. This extraordinary example was subsequently imported into the United States and features Mugen performance camshafts, bespoke ECU mapping, and an upgraded exhaust system, resulting in a robust output of 237 horsepower at the flywheel. Weight savings and enhanced agility are achieved through the implementation of carbon-fiber front and rear bumpers, an aluminum hood, and the signature 18-inch Mugen wheels.

The Mugen RR represents a true pinnacle of automotive engineering and design, embodying the ultimate expression of Honda’s engineering passion and performance philosophy. Positioned adjacent to the FD2, the comparison is stark: while the FD2 may captivate spectators with its aesthetic sophistication, the Mugen RR embodies the essence of Mugen’s commitment to precision, performance, and exclusivity.
