In the competitive three-row segment, Hyundai and Kia have taken a different approach. Instead of offering standard gasoline versions alongside electric variants, both brands have chosen to specialize their flagship models. Kia has positioned the Telluride as a rugged, family-adventure vehicle, while the Hyundai Palisade offers a more luxurious, upscale experience. Now, both models are introducing their first hybrid variants for the 2026 model year. The 2026 Kia Telluride Hybrid arrives with a new powertrain that delivers 329 horsepower and a combined fuel economy rating of 31 miles per gallon. Meanwhile, the 2026 Hyundai Palisade Hybrid mirrors the Telluride’s mechanicals but opts for a slightly larger wheel size, which affects its mileage. To determine which brand offers the superior family SUV, we put the top-tier trims of the 2026 Kia Telluride Hybrid SX-Prestige AWD and the 2026 Hyundai Palisade Hybrid Calligraphy AWD through their paces. With a starting price nearing $60,000, these premium SUVs are a significant investment. The question is whether Hyundai and Kia have succeeded in differentiating their “siblings” enough to justify the choice. Shared DNA, Different Personalities
The Telluride and Palisade have always been sister vehicles. Built on the same platform, they share the same wheelbase, dimensions, and technology. When the first-generation models were introduced, they were critically acclaimed. The Telluride even earned MotorTrend’s 2020 SUV of the Year award. While the Palisade wasn’t crowned SUV of the Year, it quickly became one of our favorite three-row SUVs and remained competitive after its midcycle refresh. This year, both brands have elevated their game by introducing hybrid powertrains. The 2026 Kia Telluride Hybrid and 2026 Hyundai Palisade Hybrid share a turbocharged 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine paired with two electric motors, producing a combined 329 horsepower and 339 lb-ft of torque. Power is sent to all four wheels through a six-speed automatic transmission. For this SUV comparison, we took both models to the Palos Verdes Peninsula in Southern California. The area’s varied terrain, featuring twisting roads, urban environments, highways, and rough pavement prone to landslides and minor tremors, provided a comprehensive testing ground. We evaluated each vehicle’s cabin space, third-row access, infotainment systems, and advanced driver assistance features. Spoiler alert: This was a razor-close comparison. Both Kia and Hyundai have delivered standout models, and consumers will likely be satisfied with either. However, as is tradition at MotorTrend, we look for a winner. After a thorough evaluation, one vehicle ultimately pulled ahead. And as you might expect, the decision wasn’t easy. The New Standard: A Look at the Powertrain The introduction of the full-size SUV hybrid segment for both brands marks a significant shift in their strategies. Hyundai has typically focused on its Ioniq line for electric vehicles and fuel efficiency, while Kia has concentrated on performance and design in its Sportage and Sorento lines. The shared powertrain of the 2026 Telluride Hybrid and 2026 Palisade Hybrid represents a step toward greater electrification without compromising performance. The 2.5-liter turbo-four engine provides the grunt needed for a vehicle of this size, while the electric motors add instant torque and efficiency. One significant difference is where these vehicles are assembled. The Kia Telluride is built in West Point, Georgia, while the Hyundai Palisade is imported from Ulsan, South Korea. This difference in origin is relevant for American-made auto enthusiasts, though both brands operate at a global standard of engineering and production. Inside the Cabin: Minimalist Chic vs. Warm Luxury While the exterior designs of the Kia Telluride Hybrid and Hyundai Palisade Hybrid are distinct—the Telluride adopts a more rugged, adventure-ready stance while the Palisade offers sleek, modern curves—the interior differences are even more pronounced. The 2026 Kia Telluride Hybrid SX-Prestige AWD interior leans into a midcentury modern aesthetic that feels both minimal and elegant. The materials quality is excellent, featuring supple leather, an Alcantara headliner that wouldn’t be out of place in a luxury European car, and genuine-looking wood-grain trim. However, the Telluride’s focus on minimalism comes at a practical cost. The center console features only four physical buttons for climate control, with the rest of the HVAC functions housed on a panel between the driver’s gauge cluster and the infotainment screen. This placement is awkward, partially obscured by the steering wheel from the driver’s perspective and a stretch for the front passenger. While it’s a clever use of space, it’s not the most ergonomic design for an SUV. The 2026 Hyundai Palisade Hybrid Calligraphy AWD interior feels more welcoming. Features editor Christian Seabaugh perfectly captured this sentiment, describing the cabin as “a home’s living room rather than an airliner. The design is unique, special, and its own thing. It’s the type of design that’s going to make the Palisade feel like an escape from the outside world, not part of the problem.” He is absolutely correct. The Palisade approaches luxury in a warmer, more contemporary way.
A key differentiator is the control layout. All HVAC functions are grouped together and easily accessible to both occupants. While the capacitive touch controls can feel crowded, we still prefer this setup over the Kia’s split-panel approach. The Palisade also benefits from volume and tuning knobs, whereas the Telluride only provides the former. This is a crucial ergonomic consideration for long road trips or daily driving where quick adjustments are necessary. Connectivity andconvenience Both interiors offer three conveniently placed USB-C ports, but the Telluride adds a second wireless charging pad to the Palisade’s single offering. However, the Hyundai counters with a unique feature: a UV-C sterilization compartment in the center console. This compartment can sanitize phones, keys, or wallets in about 10 minutes—a compelling feature for modern consumers prioritizing hygiene. Third-Row Space and Versatility For families, the third row is a critical consideration. Both of our hybrid test vehicles came equipped with second-row captain’s chairs, offering seating for seven passengers. Comfort is excellent in either SUV, and both feature thoughtfully placed USB ports on the backs of the front seats for easy access. Panoramic sunroofs in both models also help brighten the cabin and enhance the sense of openness. Accessing the third row is relatively easy in both the Telluride and Palisade, thanks to second-row seats that slide forward at the push of a button. The opening between the C-pillar and the seat is wide enough for most adults to squeeze through, and once back there, legroom is respectable. The Palisade holds a clear advantage in third-row flexibility. Its reclining and sliding third row offers noticeable comfort improvements, especially for adults on longer trips when the cargo area isn’t fully utilized. The power-folding third-row feature on the Palisade is also a major convenience, making it easier to raise or lower the seats with your hands full. In the Telluride, a strap is required to fold the seat and must be used again to pull it back up until it locks. While not difficult, we prefer the convenience of a button. One significant caveat to the Palisade’s power seats: Hyundai has issued a stop-sale and recall due to a tragic incident involving a child. The company has recalled Palisades equipped with power second- and third-row seats, and Kia has subsequently recalled Tellurides equipped with powered second-row seats. These recalls are crucial for consumer safety and should be addressed before purchasing a vehicle with these features. In-Car Technology and User Experience When looking at their infotainment systems, it’s hard to spot any meaningful differences. Both SUVs share essentially the same technology, with a few unique features to set them apart. The Kia offers built-in streaming apps like YouTube and Disney+ on its main screen, while the Palisade counters with an integrated front and rear dashcam. Both SUVs feature a dual 12.3-inch display setup, with one screen dedicated to the driver and the other for infotainment. Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto come standard, along with built-in navigation and a head-up display. They also offer seven USB-C ports spread across all three rows, massaging front seats, and a digital key. While the Telluride has a slight edge on the technology front thanks largely to its ability to stream video on the infotainment screen when parked, some buyers may find the Palisade’s built-in dashcam more useful and a better value, as Kia’s data subscription service costs around $40 per month. In the end, both infotainment systems are fundamentally similar, and the choice comes down to what you value more: video streaming vs. built-in dashcam. Advanced Driver Assistance Systems
Hyundai and Kia have made significant strides in advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS). In both SUVs, adaptive cruise control and lane keep assist worked flawlessly, keeping the vehicles centered in
