N1105016_Mother Camel Heroical Kia Telluride Hybrid vs. Hyundai Palisade Hybrid 2026 Comparison: Same DNA, Different Personalities The automotive landscape in 2026 is defined by the relentless pursuit of efficiency without sacrificing comfort, space, or performance. In this dynamic environment, hybrid family SUVs have emerged as the frontrunners for American buyers seeking a balanced, practical, and eco-conscious vehicle. Two of the most compelling contenders in this segment are the Kia Telluride Hybrid and the Hyundai Palisade Hybrid. These two SUVs, despite sharing a significant amount of underlying DNA due to their shared parent company, Hyundai Motor Group, have managed to cultivate distinct personalities that appeal to different buyer profiles. Both models are undergoing their second generation, following years of outperforming expectations in the competitive midsize SUV and three-row SUV markets. A Tale of Two Siblings: Shared Platform, Divergent Spirits
The Kia Telluride made an indelible mark on the industry upon its debut, earning the MotorTrend’s 2020 SUV of the Year award. This initial acclaim set a high bar for the Hyundai Palisade, which has consistently remained among the favorites in our evaluations. Following its midcycle update, the Palisade was even named the best three-row SUV available on the market, demonstrating the close competition between these siblings. To fully appreciate the nuances between these two vehicles, we recently conducted an intensive comparison drive along the Palos Verdes Peninsula in Southern California. This region, known for its constant land movement, provided a diverse testing ground featuring winding city streets, smooth highway stretches, and challenging stretches of rough pavement shaped by landslides and minor seismic activity. During this extensive comparison, we evaluated critical aspects such as interior space across all three rows, the ease of access to that often-neglected third row, and the performance of their infotainment systems and advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS). Spoiler Alert: This comparison was a razor-close contest. Both Kia and Hyundai have engineered standout models, and buyers would be hard-pressed to make a wrong choice. However, at MotorTrend, we don’t do ties. After a comprehensive evaluation, one SUV ultimately pulled ahead. And as you might expect, it was a difficult decision to make. Understanding the Context: 2026 and Beyond For this comparison, we evaluated the 2026 Hyundai Palisade Hybrid Calligraphy AWD against the 2027 Kia Telluride Hybrid SX-Prestige AWD. Both these models represent the pinnacle of their respective lineups and are powered by the same impressive 2.5-liter turbocharged hybrid powertrain. This system utilizes two electric motors to combine for a total output of 329 horsepower and 339 lb-ft of torque. Power is managed by a six-speed automatic transmission that routes the torque to all four wheels via an All-Wheel Drive (AWD) system. The pricing of these vehicles reflects their premium positioning in the market. The Palisade comes in at a starting price of approximately $60,380, while the Kia slightly undercuts it with a base price of around $58,135. While neither vehicle is necessarily considered “budget-friendly,” in today’s market, a $60,000 three-row hybrid SUV is a serious consideration for discerning buyers. One significant practical difference for consumers is their manufacturing location. The Telluride is produced in West Point, Georgia, making it a Made in USA product, which is a strong selling point for many American consumers. In contrast, the Palisade is imported from Ulsan, South Korea. This difference may influence purchasing decisions based on factors such as local manufacturing support, shipping logistics, and perceived quality of American craftsmanship. Front Row Revelations: A Look Inside the Cabin While the two SUVs share a similar footprint, stepping inside their cabins reveals significant differences, particularly in the front row. The Kia opts for a midcentury modern aesthetic that exudes a sense of minimalism and elegance. The interior materials quality is exceptional throughout; the leather feels supple, the Alcantara headliner wouldn’t be out of place in a luxury vehicle, and the wood-look trim across the dash and center console exude a genuine premium feel. However, a notable downside to the Telluride’s interior is its limited use of physical controls. The center console features only four buttons for the climate system, with the remainder of the HVAC functions housed on a panel located between the driver’s instrument panel display and the infotainment screen. This placement makes them awkward to use, as the steering wheel partially obstructs the view from the driver’s perspective, and they are a stretch from the front passenger’s seat. While it is a clever use of otherwise unused space, it is not the most practical solution. In contrast, the Hyundai Palisade interior feels more welcoming and user-friendly. All the HVAC functions are grouped in one place and are easily accessible to both the driver and front passenger. The capacitive touch controls can feel somewhat crowded, but we still prefer this setup over the Kia’s arrangement. The Palisade also benefits from both volume knobs and tuning knobs, whereas the Telluride only provides the former. Both interiors offer three conveniently placed USB-C ports, but the Telluride adds a second wireless charging pad to the Palisade’s single offering. The Hyundai counters with a neat trick: a UV-C sterilization compartment in the center console that can sanitize your phone, keys, or wallet in approximately 10 minutes, a feature the Kia does not offer. This added functionality appeals to modern consumers who prioritize health and hygiene.
What to Know About the Rear Seats: Space, Comfort, and Convenience Both of our Korean hybrid test vehicles came equipped with second-row captain’s chairs, meaning they can accommodate a total of seven passengers. Comfort is excellent in either SUV, and both offer thoughtfully placed USB ports on the backs of the front seats for easy access. The panoramic sunroofs in both models also help brighten the cabin and enhance the sense of spaciousness. Accessing the third row is relatively easy in both the Telluride and Palisade, thanks to second-row seats that slide forward at the push of a button. The opening between the C-pillar and the seat is wide enough for most adults to squeeze through, and once seated in the third row, legroom is respectable. However, the Palisade has a clear advantage given that its third row can recline and slide forward and aft. That flexibility can reduce cargo space, but it provides a noticeable difference in comfort, especially for adults on longer trips when the cargo area is not fully utilized. The Palisade is also the only one with a power-folding third row, which comes in handy when you are raising or lowering the seats with your hands full. In the Telluride, a strap releases the latch to fold the seat, and you must use that same strap to pull it back up until it locks into place. While it is not difficult, we would prefer to press a button and let the SUV do the work. One significant caveat to that convenience is the power seats safety recall. The 2027 Kia Telluride and 2026 Hyundai Palisade have both been the subject of recalls spurred by the tragic death of a child. Hyundai has recalled Palisades equipped with power second- and third-row seats, and Kia has subsequently recalled Tellurides equipped with powered second-row seats. This safety issue is critical for buyers to be aware of when considering these models. Cabin Technology Features: A Clash of Innovation Looking closely at their infotainment systems, it would be difficult to spot any meaningful differences. Both SUVs share essentially the same technology, with a few unique features to set them apart. The Kia offers built-in streaming apps like YouTube, Disney+, and even live TV on its main screen, while the Palisade counters with an integrated front and rear dashcam. Both SUVs feature a dual 12.3-inch display setup, with one screen dedicated to the driver and the other for infotainment. Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto come standard, along with built-in navigation and a head-up display. They also offer seven USB-C ports spread across all three rows, massaging front seats, and a digital key. While the Telluride has a slight edge on the technology front, largely thanks to its ability to stream video on the infotainment screen when parked, some buyers may find the Palisade’s built-in dashcam more useful and a better value, as Kia’s data subscription service costs around $40 per month. In the end, both infotainment systems are fundamentally similar, and the choice comes down to what you value more in your hybrid family SUV. Telluride and Palisade Safety Features: Advanced Driver Assistance Hyundai and Kia have made significant strides in advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS). In both SUVs, adaptive cruise control and lane keep assist worked flawlessly, keeping the vehicles centered in their lanes while maintaining a safe but not overly conservative distance from traffic ahead on the highway. Because these vehicles share safety technologies, their behavior on the road is virtually identical. Throughout our drive loops, we didn’t notice any meaningful differences in how the systems performed, but we did appreciate their smooth execution and how easy it is to engage both adaptive cruise control and lane keep assist. These features are crucial for buyers seeking a safe and secure ride for their families. Impressive Hybrid Fuel Economy: Same Powertrain, Different Results
Despite using the same powertrain, the 2027 Kia Telluride Hybrid is slightly more efficient than the Palisade. The Kia is rated at
