Sharing their core architecture, powertrains, and a significant portion of their technology, these SUVs operate as premium relatives, catering to families who demand space, safety, and sophistication without the traditional luxury price tag. As we move deeper into the best hybrid SUV era, both Hyundai and Kia have injected hybrid powertrains into these popular models, creating compelling new options for efficiency-conscious buyers.
While the blueprints remain remarkably similar, the devil is truly in the details. The Palisade embraces a warm, contemporary luxury that feels like a second living room, while the Telluride projects an image of rugged, upscale adventure. This review explores the latest iteration of their sibling rivalry, evaluating how the 2026 Hyundai Palisade Hybrid and 2027 Kia Telluride Hybrid perform in the real world, updated for the latest market offerings and technology. Shared Heritage, Divergent Paths Since their respective launches in 2020, both the Palisade and Telluride have overdelivered on expectations. The Kia Telluride burst onto the scene with an immediate impact, earning MotorTrend’s coveted 2020 SUV of the Year award in its debut year. The Palisade has consistently ranked among our favorites, even being named the best three-row SUV following its midcycle refresh. To test these closely related models, we headed to the undulating landscapes of the Palos Verdes Peninsula in Southern California. This dynamic region offers a diverse testing ground, featuring winding coastal roads, bustling city streets, long highway stretches, and uneven pavement shaped by tectonic movement and minor seismic activity. During the drive, we scrutinized their three-row passenger comfort, ease of access, and the integration of their infotainment and advanced driver assistance systems. For an automotive journalist, reviewing siblings is always a fascinating exercise. The challenge lies in identifying the subtle nuances that justify choosing one over the other. In this 2026–2027 comparison, the margin of victory remains razor-thin. Both Kia and Hyundai have delivered exceptional products, and buyers can feel confident selecting either model. However, as the automotive industry has evolved, the landscape of mid-size SUV reliability has also been under scrutiny, making efficiency and performance increasingly important differentiators. The Context: Premium Hybrid Power For this comparison, we lined up the 2026 Hyundai Palisade Hybrid Calligraphy AWD against the 2027 Kia Telluride Hybrid SX-Prestige AWD. Both vehicles sit at the zenith of their respective lineups and feature a unified hybrid powertrain. This setup combines a 2.5-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine with two electric motors, producing a combined output of 329 hp and 339 lb-ft of torque. Power is routed to all four wheels via a sophisticated six-speed automatic transmission. The 2026 Hyundai Palisade Hybrid price begins at approximately $60,380, while the 2027 Kia Telluride Hybrid price is slightly lower at around $58,135. Neither vehicle is positioned as an economy option; however, in the current automotive landscape, a $60,000 three-row hybrid SUV represents a significant investment in modern technology, safety, and efficiency. One critical distinction remains: the Telluride is manufactured in West Point, Georgia, whereas the Palisade is imported from Ulsan, South Korea. This difference in origin can have implications for U.S. manufacturing jobs and sometimes affects availability in local dealerships, a factor that luxury car deals seekers often consider. A Tale of Two Cabins: Front Row Revelations While these SUVs share their foundational architecture, their interiors present the most significant divergence in personality. The Kia leans into a midcentury modern aesthetic that manages to be both minimalist and elegant. The material quality throughout the cabin is exceptional. The leather is supple, the Alcantara headliner wouldn’t feel out of place in a Bentley, and the wood-look trim across the dash and center console exudes a genuinely premium feel. This design aesthetic positions the Kia Telluride as a top contender for those seeking premium SUV interior design. One potential downside to the Telluride’s interior is its reliance on digital controls over physical buttons. The center console features only four buttons for climate control, with the remaining HVAC functions housed on a vertical panel between the driver’s instrument cluster and the infotainment screen. This placement can be awkward to use; it’s partially obstructed by the steering wheel from the driver’s perspective and requires a stretch from the passenger seat. While it’s a clever use of otherwise dead space, it’s not the most practical solution for daily operations.
The Palisade, conversely, exudes a more welcoming and accessible ambiance. Features editor Christian Seabaugh aptly described the cabin as “a home’s living room rather than an airliner. The design is unique, special, and its own thing. It’s the type of design that’s going to make the Palisade feel like an escape from the outside world, not part of the problem.” His assessment remains valid: the Palisade is less minimalist than the Telluride and approaches luxury in a warmer, more contemporary manner. This Hyundai Palisade interior design is often highlighted by reviewers for its inviting atmosphere, making it a strong choice in the family SUV interior category. Part of what makes the Palisade’s interior feel more welcoming is its control layout. All HVAC functions are grouped in one place and are easily accessible to both the driver and front passenger. The capacitive touch controls can feel slightly crowded, but this setup is generally preferred over the Kia’s segmented approach. The Palisade also benefits from both volume and tuning knobs, whereas the Telluride provides only the former. These ergonomic details are crucial for drivers who prioritize physical interaction with their vehicle’s controls. Both interiors offer three conveniently placed USB-C ports, but the Telluride adds a second wireless charging pad to the Palisade’s single offering. The Hyundai counters with a neat trick: a UV-C sterilization compartment in the center console that can sanitize your phone, keys, or wallet in about 10 minutes—a feature the Kia does not offer. For buyers researching hygienic SUV features, this UV-C capability is a noteworthy selling point, potentially justifying the higher Hyundai Palisade price. Beyond Comfort: What to Know About the Rear Seats Both of our Korean hybrid test vehicles came equipped with second-row captain’s chairs, meaning they seat a total of seven passengers. Comfort is excellent in either SUV, and both offer thoughtfully placed USB ports on the backs of the front seats for easy access. Panoramic sunroofs in both models also help brighten the cabin and enhance the sense of openness. For families considering a comfortable 3-row SUV, seating configuration is paramount. Accessing the third row is relatively easy in both the Telluride and Palisade, thanks to second-row seats that slide forward at the push of a button. The opening between the C-pillar and the seat is wide enough for most adults to squeeze through, and once back there, legroom is respectable. The Palisade, however, has a clear advantage given that its third row can recline and slide fore and aft. That flexibility can eat into cargo space, but it offers a noticeable difference in comfort, especially for adults on longer trips when the cargo area isn’t fully in use. The Palisade is also the only one with a power-folding third row, which comes in handy when you’re raising or lowering the seats with your hands full. In the Telluride, a strap releases the latch to fold the seat, and you must use that same strap to pull it back up until it locks into place. It’s not difficult, but we’d rather press a button and let the SUV do the work. Critical Safety Recall Note: It is imperative to note that the Hyundai Palisade power-folding second and third-row seats were the subject of a stop-sale and recall following the tragic death of a child. Hyundai recalled Palisades equipped with powered second- and third-row seats. Consequently, Kia also recalled Tellurides equipped with powered second-row seats. Buyers should verify the current status of these recalls with their local dealerships. This critical safety update is a paramount consideration for those prioritizing 2026 SUV safety, especially when comparing midsize family SUV safety features. Cabin Technology: Similar DNA If you look closely at their infotainment systems, you’d be hard-pressed to spot any meaningful differences. Both SUVs share essentially the same tech, with a few unique features to set them apart. The Kia offers built-in streaming apps like YouTube, Disney+, and even live TV on its main screen, while the Palisade counters with an integrated front and rear dashcam system. This integrated security feature positions the Palisade as a strong choice for buyers seeking integrated dashcam technology, potentially saving money on aftermarket installations.
Both SUVs feature a dual 12.3-inch display setup, with one screen dedicated to the driver and the other for infotainment. Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto come standard, along with built-in navigation and a head-up display (HUD). They also offer seven USB-C ports spread across all three rows, massaging front seats, and a digital key. These modern conveniences solidify their status as technologically advanced SUVs and align with consumer expectations for
